This is an abbreviated timeline of Covid-19 over 1,000 days. This timeline provides a snapshot of events against which the Methodist Church's Covid-19 Response Plan can be compared.

The Government introduces the 4-tiered Alert Level system to help combat COVID-19. The Prime Minister announces that New Zealand is at Alert Level 2.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern asks people 70 years old and older and people with compromised immune systems to stay at home as much as possible. She asks people who can work from home to do so, and says people should limit travel within the country.

23 Mar 2020

At 1:30pm the Prime Minister announces New Zealand has moved to Alert Level 3, effective immediately. In 48 hours, New Zealand will move to Alert Level 4.

People are instructed to stay at home. Schools and other educational facilities will be closed from 24 March. All non-essential businesses will close (this excludes essential businesses like supermarkets, pharmacies and medical clinics.) Travel will be severely limited and healthcare services will be re-prioritised.

All of New Zealand moved to the COVID-19 Protection Framework, also known as the traffic lights, at 11:59pm on 2 December 2021.

The COVID-19 Protection Framework replaced Alert Levels in December 2021 and ended in mid-September 2022. It had 3 traffic light settings of Red, Orange and Green.

At 11:59pm New Zealand moves to the COVID-19 Protection Framework, or traffic light system.

Northland, Auckland, Taupo, Rotorua Lakes, Kawerau, Whakatane, Ōpōtiki, Gisborne, Wairoa, Rangitikei, Whanganui, and Ruapehu districts move to Red.

The rest of the North Island, and the South Island, move to Orange.

The Government introduces Omicron phases, with different approaches to testing and isolation as case numbers grow.

Phase 1: Focus on stamping out small outbreaks, with PCR testing and 14-day isolation period for COVID-19 cases.

Phase 2: Focus on slowing the spread and protecting those most at risk of getting seriously ill. Contact tracing switches to online self-assessments, isolation period drops to 10 days.

Phase 3: Focus on safely managing COVID-19 at home, with self-testing kits of rapid antigen tests (RATs) and isolation only for people who test positive and their Household Contacts.
