The Methodist Church of New Zealand's new webmaster, Alec Utting, wants parishes and other groups within the Connexion to make better use of the Church's website.
Alec has prepared an 'Introductory Guide' to help people set up their own webpages on the Methodist Church's website (www.methodist.org.nz). The guide runs through the basic procedures needed to create pages, insert text and images, create links to other websites, and set up enquiry forms.
He is also prepared to run workshops for parishes or synods where he can present the material in the guide in person.
In April and May Alec held two workshops for Canterbury congregations looking to spiff up their presence on the website About 15 people from Rangiora, Oxfoxd, Kaiapoi, Malvern and Christchurch attended.
Alec has helped Wesley Historical Society develop its webpage, and he has set up a webpage for the Liberal Society, where members can post articles or sermons they wish to share.
"I would like to see the Church's website used more by parishes and organisations such as the Evangelical Network, Te Taha Maori, and the ethnic synods," he says.
People in many parishes will be familiar with Alec through his business, Envelopes Made Easy, which provides software that churches can use to computerise their records. Alec says he spent half his working life as a teacher and half as a software developer so he is ideally placed to be the church's webmaster.
"My first priority is training. I have the ability to travel to hold workshops and give groups hands-on instruction in posting their material on the website."
Anyone who wishes to organise training or ask other questions can contact Alec at firstname.lastname@example.org or 03 960 5289.
