THE LENTEN SEASON AT DURHAM ST 2016
LENT ONE – February 14 The Knox Centre
We will begin the journey of Lent with guest preacher Sister Kathleen Rushton joining us on February 14 to set the scene for our journey towards Easter. Below is a summary of what she will share with us.
Christian Sunday Worship begins each Lent by proclaiming one of the gospel accounts of the temptations of Jesus. The core of these temptations is the enticement to abuse relationships - whakawhanaungatanga/right relationship with Earth, people and God. Luke 4:1-13 assists us now to reflect on the use and abuse of power in relationship with Earth, people and God. First, we shall ponder this gospel using a very ancient art, practised at one time by all Christians, known as lectio divina. Then, we shall rediscover Lent through exploring its origins, links with baptism and as preparation for the joy of Easter. We will conclude by exploring the meaning of the three interwoven Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving for us today.
An Introduction to Sister Kathleen:
Kathleen Rushton of Nga Whaea Atawhai Sisters of Mercy teaches Scripture courses for the Catholic Institute of Aotearoa New Zealand at the Christchurch Catholic Education Office and in the past for the Ecumenical Institute of Distance Theological Studies. Her research in John's Gospel includes the cosmology of the prologue, water and harvest imagery and the implications of ecology and science for spirituality today. She writes a monthly Scripture reflection on the Sunday gospel readings for Tui Motu.
