Wesleyhaven History to be DocumentedAt a time when many church groups are selling their aged-care facilities to private operators, Wellington's Wesley Community Action (WCA) has made a bold decision to continue owning and operating its Wesleyhaven complex in Lower Hutt. The decision sits well with the three key words motivating Wesley Community Action's work – community, compassion and change.Plans for the original Wesleyhaven retirement village date back to 1947, and it is thought to be one of New Zealand's older continuously operating aged-care facilities, and currently cares for around 120 residents. When David Hanna, Director of Wesley Community Action, met recently with Methodist Women's Fellowship (MWF) members, they said they could see the value of recording the stories of Wesleyhaven's beginnings and operation. It was thought that such a project could give a sense of history to staff members, residents and other interested folk who have been involved in Wesleyhaven as well as triggering a fresh lease of life in the creative energy which has marked its history. After consulting with present and former board members and the Wesley Historical Society it was decided to proceed with a project that attempts to record the fascinating stories of Wesleyhaven's formation and ongoing care-giving.It is anticipated that an appropriate researcher will be engaged to record the oral history and to interweave these stories with existing archival material into a suitable publication. Mr Hanna is interested in hearing further from people who have worked at Wesleyhaven, with the Methodist Women's Fellowship, Auxiliary, Trust Board or Fair Committee, or anyone who may have useful information or useful contacts through church or family members living or working at Wesleyhaven. If you have a story to share, please contact David Hanna, Director, Wesley Community Action, PO Box 9932, Wellington. Or Telephone; 04 385 3727 (ext 879) or (For further information relating to this release please contact either David Hanna, or Peter Mitchell at the above address.)
