Held in Trust - Managing the Assets of the Methodist Church of New Zealand
Wesley College, later Prince Albert College, on its commanding Queen Street site overlooking the growing heart of the city, featured in many photos and drawings of an earlier Auckland. In this, the second of the Occasional Papers to be published by the Wesley Historical Society (NZ) with the New Zealand Methodist Trust Association (MTA) and the Investment Advisory Board (lAB), the Rev'd Donald Phillipps traces the development of land and buildings from college to commercial investment.
It is a remarkable journey which in some ways reflects Auckland's own extraordinary development from beachhead settlement to international city. This is a story of responsible stewardship and successfully negotiated change which has provided the Methodist Church with a significant asset. The PACT Trust 2086 has secured the land into the future and continues to provide an income that allows for generous and creative ways of sharing the Gospel within Church and community.
It is most appropriate 'that Donald Phillipps, a distinguished Methodist presbyter and historian, should have researched and written this paper for he signed the Memorandum of Lease as the elected president of the Methodist Conference in 1986.
The Wesley Historical Society is grateful to its Honoured Member Donald for his work and for the way the updated story has been carefully traced and presented. The Society would also want to thank the MTA and the lAB for their initiative and their support for this publication.
