Pentecost Sunday - Wear Red!
We will be celebrating Pentecost on Sunday 27 May. To help mark this day can everyone wear something red on the day. Bruce would also like to have a number of people read Acts 2 verses 1-4 in their native tongue. If you would be prepared to volunteer to do this please let him know. These will all be read at the same time to convey a sense of what the reading describes.
Soup-Makers Needed
Volunteers are needed to make a pot of soup for each of the Thursday lunchtime concerts planned as part of this year's Winter@Wesley from 21 June to 26 July. As before, ingredient costs can be reimbursed to soup-makers. Please let Matthew (384 7695) or Heather (475 8855) know if you'd like to help out.

Civil Defence Volunteer Training
Recently Bruce and a number of other ministers from inner-city churches visited the Wellington Emergency Management Office (WEMO) to discuss how the city's faith-based communities can be more involved in making Wellington a more resilient city. One idea that was discussed was training of church members to become Civil Defence Volunteers. This training would tighten the links between our church communities and the official Emergency Management structure in NZ. Also, an important aspect to the training is teaching volunteers to be able to share their knowledge with their friends and family to help promote preparedness.
The next Civil Defence Volunteer Training Course starts on 6 June and there are a number of spaces available. WEMO would very much like to see members of our communities involved. The course is held over seven weeks with one session per week for two to three hours in the evening. Once training is completed, WEMO keeps in contact with the Volunteers a few times per year - sometimes for training exercises. Bruce has information and application forms available. Please contact him if you are interested.

Downtown Community Ministry's Bookfair is still a long way off, but did you know DCM collect books all year round? Drop off any donations to DCM Monday 10am-4pm, Tue/Wed/Thu 10am-1pm or Friday 10am-4pm, or at the church office.
Food Bank Supplemented by Community Pantry
For over 10 years Wesley's Porirua Food Bank has been distributing emergency food parcels to people in need in Eastern Porirua. In 2011 a record of over 1,950 food parcels were distributed to over 3,000 adults and 4,000 children, representing a 125% increase over 2008 levels.
Faced with this ever increasing need for Food Parcels, in late 2011 Wesley Porirua initiated a 'Community Pantry' which collaborates with residents of Porirua East to evolve the existing food bank of Wesley Porirua into a community garden; a place where people can come to grow and harvest fruit and vegetables, share their skills and learn about gardening, cooking and healthy eating all while building social skills, confidence and strong community links.
Today the Community Pantry is literally growing and supplementing food supplies with lovely fresh vegetables. In addition the initiative has 'loaned' tools to over 15 families who are establishing their own vegetable gardens.
