Food Day Appeal
DCM are holding their pre-winter Food Day Appeal on Saturday 19 May. Wesley Church has been allocated Newtown New World as usual, for the slightly longer time of 9am-2pm. We have more spaces to fill and ideally we'd like two people per hour. If you can help please contact Matthew at the Parish Office ASAP. Thanks!
Wesley Day with St. Matthew's
On Sunday 20 May we will be worshipping with St. Matthew's Congregation from Brooklyn with a Holy Communion service here at Wesley Church, 10am. The focus will be on Wesley Day, celebrating Wesleyan tradition and marking the anniversary of the signing of the Anglican-Methodist covenant.
Pentecost Sunday - Wear Red!
We will be celebrating Pentecost on Sunday 27 May. To help mark this day can everyone wear something red on the day. Bruce would also like to have a number of people read Acts 2 verses 1-4 in their native tongue. If you would be prepared to volunteer to do this please let him know. These will all be read at the same time to convey a sense of what the reading describes.
Civil Defence Volunteer Training
Recently Bruce and a number of other ministers from inner-city churches visited the Wellington Emergency Management Office (WEMO) to discuss how the city's faith-based communities can be more involved in making Wellington a more resilient city. One idea that was discussed was training of church members to become Civil Defence Volunteers. This training would tighten the links between our church communities and the official Emergency Management structure in NZ. Also, an important aspect to the training is teaching volunteers to be able to share their knowledge with their friends and family to help promote preparedness.
The next Civil Defence Volunteer Training Course starts on 6 June and there are a number of spaces available. WEMO would very much like to see members of our communities involved. The course is held over seven weeks with one session per week for two to three hours in the evening. Once training is completed, WEMO keeps in contact with the Volunteers a few times per year - sometimes for training exercises. Bruce has information and application forms available. Please contact him if you are interested.
Miss a Meal in May
Instead of dining out this month, donate the cost of one cafe or restaurant meal to Kaibosh and help us rescue food for people in need. To donate the money you would have spent on a meal, visit www.givealittle.co.nz/org/kaibosh or contact the Kaibosh team at www.kaibosh.org.nz
In 2011, Kaibosh rescued and redistributed over 22,000 kg of food (equivalent to over 62,000 meals) that were good enough to eat but would have been thrown away. We continue to rescue at least 2,000 kg a month.
To keep up with increasing demand and supply, Kaibosh desperately needs to upgrade their storage facilities. By donating the cost of a meal in May to Kaibosh, you are helping feed hungry Wellingtonians whilst rescuing good food from landfill.
