For some time we had been looking at the broken basket ball hoop in our church's hall wondering about getting it down, getting it welded, or replaced. Once we received a grant through the "Let the Children Live " fund, our minds were made up to install new hoops at either end of the hall. It was a bit of a mission to unscrew the old ones from their frames , but a couple of dedicated people used a sling and pulley system to lower the backing boards and voila, two beautiful hoops were installed and a new ball bought to go with them.
Our first purchases, actually, were two free-standing hoops for the younger ones in our children's church. However, no sooner had they been in place than an enthusiastic teenager slam dunked a ball and broke the backing board! Oh no! Now the teenagers have the new high hoops, they won't be tempted to use the smaller stands (we hope).
The grant has also enabled us to purchase indoor cricket sets, soccer and volley balls, and table tennis bats, balls and net. We were donated a broken table tennis table and that has now been repaired with the grant money.
It is great to have a wide range of indoor sports equipment for the children's church, our 10am youth, and our combined youth group to use. Also, other community groups will be able to have more fun in our hall. In the past, students from a language school have come in for an activity, such as volleyball or basketball, and now we have good equipment that they can use.
Having fun together, and learning to be good sports, is all part of fellowship and an important part of our church's ministry.
